Leaving an injured person to die is not a rash act. It's tantamount to murder. It was premeditated as they onlytook him from the worksite 3 hours after the accident. It was a willfulact. Any reasonable person would tell you that leaving a paralysed personin a MONSOON drain is a cruel act.What we must consider here is the nature of the crime. If the maximumpunishment under committing a rash act is less than the punishment forengaging illegal workers, then our Attorney-General's office mustreevaluate the case. The reason they left him to die is because theywere afraid as they had hired him illegally.The last time I felt such outrage was when Seah Kian Hock was fined$500 for causing the death of Jacky the dog.This time I don't just feel outrage but I also feel a deep sense ofShame as a Singaporean.WHAT KIND OF PEOPLE ARE WE?

Singapore culture is slowlyevolving into the culture of the dollar. The accumulation and display ofwealth is the goal in many lives now. This is no longer the 'kampung' daysof gotong-royong, neighbours looking after each others' children, sharingfood and helping to look after each others general welfare. Singapore is turning into another London, New York, Los Angeles, albeit acleaner version of them, and with more trees, but in human essence, justanother big city with many "lost" people, with 'lost' values and no senseof human empathy. Many of us have managed to retain our 'kampung' valuespassed to us by our parents, but many have not, and the young are evenworse off. That's what's happened to us. We are losing our identities, andthere is nothing to take its place. The symptoms are all there - McDonaldkids, Marina kids, teen gangs, discipline problems in schools, rising teenpregnancies, teenagers smoking and drinking openly all over the island,even 13 - 14 yr old girls, teenage prostitues selling themselves so theycan buy Guess/Versace jeans. Our kids are being driven close to madness bythe extremely stressful education system, so they rebel. Forgive mycynicism, but what I see every day distresses me and my friends.
