TSUBI JEANS : The best place to spot this new look is backstage at the collectionswhere models emerge post-parade in their rattiest jeans and T-shirts,teamed with Louis Vuitton bags and Gucci heels. As Elle’s fashiondirector Valeryi Yong explains, adding a prestige brand helps carry offthe look and lends credibility, while giving a fashion-conscious nod toquality, "People who love luxury items are obviously fashion-aware anddon’t want to look like the rest of the pack," Yong says, "It’s more ofan art these days to dress like an individual."Of course, reality plays a part, too - even in the often suureal worldof fashion, "A lack of money breeds creativity,"she says, "Who canafford to dress in designer top-to-tow, and who would want to?Individualism gives a stamp of personal identity."The desire to create a unique look is seeing fashion trives shopping inunlikely places and scouring retail strips once considered to beoutside their style zones. TSUBI JEANS : I went for a wander down Chapel St today and was stopped dead in my tracksoutside Surf Dive & Ski by the most blatant example of designer copying thatI've seen in a long time. (I'm not talking about designer fakes, but about alabel copying another's piece and passing it off as original.)The item I noticed was a pair of Rip Curl jeans that were so like Tsubi'swide-leg distressed jeans (see ), it was uncanny -even down to a scrawled "rip curl" on the coin pocket where the scrawled"tsubi" logo normally goes. Tsubi jeans are very distinctive, so I am amazedthat Rip Curl would have the hide to copy them so blatantly - especiallyafter Sass & Bide were made to pull a Tsubi copy from their range afterbeing taken to court by Tsubi. Then I got to thinking: at what point does a design become a "copy" ofanother, rather than just being "influenced by"? The "original" designerstyles and trends we see on the catwalk eventually filter down intomass-market fashion in some form or another... is that copying? No doubt RipCurl would justify its design by saying that it was merely responding to thecurrent market demand for wide-leg distressed jeans.

TSUBI JEANS : Hey Afers! This was in Australia Elle issue 2001 Jan. I thought it was incrediblyinteresting and very much true as to what most you of would do (I amgenerising here).- Blend streetwear with strategic touches of global icon luxe and you'vegot today's individual style statement. By Linlee Allen. -To some, it’s a curious concept - why would anyone in flea market jeansand a ‘70’s T-shirt be wearing a Gucci belt or shoes that cost at leastfive times the entire ensemble? Fashion’s eclectic new frontier isseeing luxury labels turning up in streetwise wardrobes. Meanwhile, atthe other end of town, lable junkes who can afford to buy the real thingare adding streetwear - and even pre-loved items - to their oncestrictly designer repertoire. While head-to-toe label devotion may havebeen a badge of honour in the ‘80s, today’s fashion credibility demandsan individual approach that money alone can’t buy.Rather than price tags, the most important factor is the wayfashion-savvy consumers combine prestige accessories, local streetweardesigns - such as Kitten, I Peck Your Pun and Tsubi - and vintagepieces. "This is the future of what’s happening in fashion right now,"explains Wendy Marshall, owner of Perth’s Elle boutique. "We havecustomers who will mix and match these (streetwear) brands withinternational labels like Ann Demeulemeester, Chloe, Marni and Commesdes Garcons simply to personalise their style, in turn making it moreunique."
