TEENS IN JEANS : This begs a burning question for me. I've noticed for years that many peopleattend Catholic mass on Saturday afternoon rather than Sunday morning, andif they do they dress extremely casually. I've seen people in shorts andtube tops go into church. This goes against every fibre of my being, and I'mnot a dress up queen by any stretch. But what happened to the "Sunday Best"clothing that people used to wear to church? Is this no longer the case justin Catholic churches, or is it a Sat vs Sunday deal, or is it location orwhat? And how come they go to Sunday Mass on Saturday afternoon? What's withthat? TEENS IN JEANS : I don't know, but as soon as I didn't have to, I stopped wearing it. Ihated being forced to wear dresses as a child. As soon as that ruleended (when I was in Junior High), it would take something *REALLY*important to get me into a dress.I don't know, because I haven't tested them all, but the ones I wentto have had a mixture of people in all kinds of dress - fromultra-snazzy to sleazy. I have no problem with tank tops and shorts.I'm there for the word of god, not a fashion show.Maybe someone with more knowledge than I can really explain it. It hasto do with the timeframe that we have for the obligation of mass. Forinstance, when my daughter's class had a First Communion mass, it wasat 10am on a Saturday. That was too early, so we had to go to massagain for the official time for the weekend.Some churches don't even have Saturday masses. Ours does because thereis a large congregation, and the more masses to choose from, thebetter we will fit in the building. It also makes it easier forsomeone who can make it on Saturday evening, but not on a Sunday.
TEENS IN JEANS : Saturday evening "counts" because it's a holdover from Jewish tradition-a service on the Eve of the day counts. So, they are treating Sunday asit bagan Saturday evening (but they don't wait until stars come out)Society in general has gotten more casual. Catholic churches in teh USused to requie that woemn have a covering on their heads and arnscovered. When that stopped after Vatican II, it slid down from there.Though not Catholic, it has only been in the last couple of years thatmyself wear pants to church. Very few men are in tie and jacket versuswhen I was a child and my kids have the following dress code (familyrule- not church) no T-shirt with message on it and shoes. That's aboutit.No, Mass on Saturday evening fulfills the obligation for Sunday Mass. It's not limited to Catholicism. Many churches, presumablyin an effort to scare off fewer people, are having less formalservices. Which services are the more casual ones varies bychurch, and at some churches most, if not all, the services aremore casual. It does seem to be the case that the earlierservices on Sunday tend to be a bit more formal. I preferdressing up a bit myself (just seems wrong to go to church injeans), but perhaps I'm an old fuddy duddy.
TEENS IN JEANS : Our church is a come-as-you-are type place. It took me a long time to getused to seeing people (pastor included) come in wearing shorts.I mean, I guess God doesn't mind what you wear to church. I'm guessing He'sprobably just glad you're there. But part of me thinks making an effort tolook nice is sort of like a show of respect. I wouldn't dream of wearingsomething tacky to my grandmother's house, so I sure don't want to look likea scrub in God's house. That said, I will wear nice jeans. And when it was agazillion degrees this summer, I wore shorts a time or two, but I feltweird, so my most casual outfit on the rest of the hot days was capri pants.My church has taken the casual route in an effort to draw people in whomight be put off by a lot of formalities. Part of me thinks that's a reallygood thing, but sometimes I wonder if it's *too* casual. I feel the same way. My church is a very mixed bag. Wehave everything from little old ladies who always dress up rightdown to their Sunday hat to teens whose jeans belong in the ragbin. It's a little disorienting to me ;-) On the other hand, Ihave to observe that it is often those who are least dressed upwho are most active in church life, and so I'm not going to bethe one to hold it against them even though it goes against allmy upbringing ;-)
TEENS IN JEANS : Hey, I'm right there with you, FD. :-) Judaism hasn't caught on to CasualSaturday, evidentally, because we dress to the nines for Shabbat. I would*never* and I mean *NEVER* wear pants to shul. I don't even wear them on aweekday if I'm going to pick something up at the office. I would feel nekkidor something. Nor would I let my kids wear casual clothing to shul. When weleft MA, my son no longer had to wear a suit to shul, but he wears a blueblazer, khaki pants, button-down ivy shirt and a tie and belt. Good leathershoes, no sneakers. Daughter wears a dress, tights or stockings. Nosleeveless, no tummy showing, over the knees. I wear a dress that covers myelbows and has a neckline that covers my collarbone. It usually is almostankle length, maybe an inch or two shorter. I wear hats. I have a 'hat lady'that comes up from the southern part of our state before the HHs and has themost wonderful hand made hats. (To see pictures, email me. My daughtermodeled several of them.) I wear flat shoes, however. I hate heels.
