RIPPED JEANS : I heard an interesting story on NPR...an episode devotedto "the sissy." Guy told about being overweight and totally picked on bythe students, for his weight, and for being fairly effeminate to boot. His best friend from another town was a punk rocker (this was in the 80's,and the attire in his neck of the words was a plaid shirt with a blackheavy metal [ACDC etc] or harley t-shirt underneath). He came back toschool one summer wearing eyeliner, with spiked hair, earring, rippedjeans, nailpolish, the whole bit. Not that he felt very much like arebel...but he was seen as such, and was given a wide berth. His clothesallowed him to balance effeminate markers (mascara, nail polish) withmacho stuff...chains, ripped jeans, black leather jacket. The students'interpretation was that he was a total psycho, that he was capable of*anything*. But he wasn't; he was just grateful for being left alone.

RIPPED JEANS : There are a lot of people who would prefer to be feared rather thanridiculed. The "trench coat mafia" thing is just an exaggeration ofthis...totally understandable reaction to the noxious classist atmosphereof high school and the way children--the "good" ones I mean--behave likethe Lord of the Flies any chance they get. Add to this a genuinelyunstable personality, psychological dysfunction, and misanthropy, and youget the school murders that we have been experiencing for the past coupleof years. No I can't. But it astounds me that everyone who comments on thisphenomenon canonly talk about the insane part of these guys' behavior, and haven'tmentioned the glorified jock culture in high schools. Why have thesemurders occured more than once? Because of video games and violence inmovies? Give me a break.Yes, this is a horrible event, and extremely chilling. Wouldn't it be agood idea to talk about why it happened, and will happen again. Take agood look at how horrible children can be to each other, and try tothink about the ways the most unstable among us find to cope, or not cope.

RIPPED JEANS : I know--it surprised me too ;-) But it really does standout. I also found that out when grading papers (especially thelonger ones) I'd start to get so grateful for the papersthat had good spelling and grammar that it had a *powerful*impact on my impulse to give people good or bad grades! WhenI got a paper that had good spelling, good grammar, *and*was well written, WOW! I was ready to give them an "A" evenif the argumentation or facts were lousy! Of course, I hadto discipline myself to pay attention to the content andgive that its proper due as well, but the students who wrotewell definitely had a leg up on those who didn't. As far as informal communication goes, obviously thestandards are more lax. I know that typos and such escapeme on occasion, and I'd hate to be judged based solely onmy Usenet output. On the other hand, I wouldn't discountthe impact of grammar, punctuation, and style on Usenetentirely. For one thing, scary as it may be, some employersare doing 'net searches on prospective employees! Also,on Usenet, the only way you have to present yourself is withyour typewritten words. In face-to-face situations, peoplemight look at your clothes or other aspects of your appearanceto see how you present yourself. On Usenet, people will noticeyour writing style. Non-standard spelling, punctuation, andso forth is sort of like showing up in ripped jeans anda t-shirt. Is that a bad thing? Maybe not, as Usenet isgenerally a pretty informal place. On the other hand, itsays you're the sort of person who shows up in ripped jeansand a t-shirt ;-) Also, I've found that some people carryoff writing style idiosyncracies better than others do, inthe same way my sister could wear ripped jeans and a t-shirtand look stylish, and I'd look just plain ragged! I've neverbeen sure why that is so, exactly, but I've seen it happentime and again.

RIPPED JEANS : Oh, some parents do too much, and their sense of style is outdated. I wasn'tallowed to wear ripped jeans to school, I was actually threatened not to, orthey'd be thrown to the curb. But *everyone* was wearing ripped jeans at thetime. I wanted to experiment with my style and feel free to make mistakes, butmy mother wouldn't let me out of the house looking like everyone else atschool. The fact that she worked at my school should have been to my advantage.I thought that she had an idea what kids were wearing, but she knew if Iembarrassed myself, not to the other kids, but to my teachers, they'd all laughat her. I guess.Would you rather wear what you want to wear or what your mother thinks is"appropriate"? You could be lucky and your mom is hip, or she could limit yourself-discovery phase, like mine did. Do you know what it's like when yourmother insists that your jeans are not only pressed, but *creased*?

RIPPED JEANS : Feathered hair. I'm just glad I knew which way to turn the curling iron so itwouldn't curl back upon itself. ::snicker:: my sister had trouble with that, and so did my best friend.I understand completely. Several factors went into my experience different thanmy younger sister. My mom went to work at the other high school in my districtby the time my sister hit H.S., so she wasn't there to be embarrassed. Mymother had a lousy experience where my grandmother had shopped for her in themen's dept. because she's 5'11" and so am I (only I admit to being 6'0" even),but my sister is average, 5'6", I think. So, finding clothes I liked that mymother approved of/paid for, that actually *fit* was horrible. I was in 8thgrade the last time I could shop productively in the Junior Dept. Sister'salways loved her fashion magazines, always loved shopping. Sister's also fiveyears younger, and the youngest, so my mother, of course, let her get away withripped jeans, only by then, it was almost over. Of course, I'm nowhere near asvain as her now, nor needy, nor superficial, nor materialistic (she has overthirty pairs of black shoes!! WTF? I could pick out maybe five necessarilydifferent pairs and the rest are redundant) as she is, and I know how to dolaundry and iron, and she just gets frustrated and overwhelmed. You know, lastlaugh kind of smug shit. :)
