As recently as 1992 I could getpre-washed 501s at Nordstrom's for $18 on sale. Now they are about $28 atthe damn factory stores, for *really* messed up irregulars. Meanwhile,one can get Wranglers for $15 at Target. I've just about worn through mylast surviving Levis and will not buy another pair.On a related note, the last time I looked at 501s they were made of a*much* lighter denim than the pair I had one. Have they really cut backon their denim weight? Or were those oddballs?
LEVIS JEANS : Levi-Straus has also pulled some nasty corporate stunts, like refusing tosell to smaller retail outlets that couldn't sell up to quota. Severalfamily-owned clothing stores in my part of Indiana lost their accounts,which effectively does the same thing as opening a Wal-mart in town...moremega stores, no local owners. My husband used to work for a store that sold Levis. They do have thispolicy. It is to stop people from buying mass quantities of Levis andtaking them overseas to sell on the black market at jacked-up prices.Or, at least, that's what Levis reps told my hubby. My sister, who spenta summer in Russia, said she saw people selling Levis for $100 inAmerican currency. So, just based on my experience, the policy is therefor a reason. Levis also has a lifetime guarantee on their jeans. Mine got a hole inthe knewe after 8 months and they replaced them, no questions asked. Sonot all their policies seem "consumer unfriendly." I love Levis, only jeans I've ever found that fit well and last me morethan a year, but YMMV.

LEVIS JEANS : A friend of mine recently returned from a trip to Dublin and told me Levisjeans retail for roughly $80 US dollars in the Dublin clothing stores.I think he is just pulling my leg because they retail here in the US for$22 to $27 or roughly 14 to 17 Punt.Yup, Russ, it's true. I'm living in Italy, and haven't been to Ireland inover six months, (working abroad for a while), but Levi's are pretty steepover there when compared to other jeans. It's the same over here (inMilan), where they cost about 120,000 Lira (i.e. £50 Sterling, or £60Irish Punts). Crazy or what?What's crazy is your Sterling - Punt exchange rate. Check a newspaper my friend and you'll see that £50 Sterling is approx £48 Irish Punts.The street price for 501's in Dublin is now 39 Punts ($62.40 at current rates) although it was as high as 50 Punts before. Also the price given for 501's in the U.S. is not accurate. You can buy unwashed 501's in the U.S. for the prices mentioned but these are not available in Ireland. The equivalent pairs cost anywhere from $29 (on special in Sears or Mervyns) right up to about $48 in places like Nordstrom's. Over the last 6 years the price difference has dropped significantly. When I started bringing over pairs the difference was at least twice what it is now. My last visit to LA in May gave me the prices above. If you're planning on bringing stuff over may I suggest some RayBans aswell?
