JORDACHE JEANS : # Moly DOES reduce pressure, and therefore velocity. Most shooters will# compensate by adding a few tenths (.223) to over a full grain (.300WM)# of powder to compensate for this pressure reduction. This alone almost# certainly negates any beneficial effect moly has on throat erosion,# which in my opinion is a dubious claim to begin with. The first part is true, the conclusion is false because you misunderstandhowthe moly reduces throat erosion. Throat erosion is almost completely duetothermal effects and gas/powder partical passage at very high pressure. See# The reasons I use moly are (1) cleaning, and (2) barrel heating. There# are no other reasons to use it.I use it for all of the above. With low velocity cartridges (3200 fps orso andbelow) it definitely has cleaning advantages. As you crank the velocity upto 4000fps or above (I've got a couple toys that run in the 4100 to 4400 fps rangeif IHere a link to a very interesting article about this subject in SmallCaliber News: .Then check out .

JORDACHE JEANS : ---------------------------------------- ---------------------------Learn about rec.guns at Larry L. Taylor wrote:#Some people however coat their bullets for other reasons. Particularly for#those high velocity rounds, it drops the velocity maybe a couple of hundred#feet per second. That may cause a slight loss in accuracy since some#bullets perform better the faster they go. However, I view the reduced#velocity as a plus since reduced throat errosion should extend the life of#the barrel. You can also reduce velocity by reducing the powder charge, which hasdefinite effects on lessening throat erosion. No one has been able toshow that Moly lessens throat erosion, for any reason- in fact theopposite, moly combined with carnuba wax (the "NECO" process) forms acarbon ring in the throat which makes a choke point that increases wear. The popularity of abrasives in benchrest soared once this was discovered, causing McMilland and Lilja to void warranties due to overpolished bores.

JORDACHE JEANS : Finding an accurate load, in high or low velocity, is a trial and errormethod with or without Moly.#And say what you want, copper fouling is virtually a thing of#the past. #Yeah, I've got an Outers foul-out to deal with the Cu buildup,If it is a thing of the past, why do you need a Outer's FO? haha I wouldagree that copper fouling is very managable in custom hand-lappedbarrels. OTOH Try telling the owner of a Savage rifle in a magnum orhigh intensity chambering that copper fouling is virtually a thing ofthe past!#but even tho' it's battery powered, it's still a pain to deal with in the#field when going thru 300-500 rounds per day.I agree, the FO is a bit of a pain to set up, but once set up it doesits job with zero effort. Cleaning out powder fouling is stillnecessary, but the wear and tear on the bore (and the elbows) saved bynot having to clean out copper fouling makes it worth it. If you'regoing through 300-500 rounds per day varminting, especially with a.22-250 or better, you really need the FO... which you already know.

JORDACHE JEANS : I'm curious why a moly user uses the FO anyway... I thought theyeither didn't get copper fouling, or just lived with it. :)Ken.-- ---------------------------------------- --------------------------------- Don't call your civil war | Mail: kmarsh at charm dot net our War on Terrorism. | WWW: ---------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------Learn about rec.guns at I still have lots of bullets already moly coated...I like the ease ofcleaning...it is messy...I need to shoot out a couple more barrels beforedeciding if it prolongs barrel life or not...I never read that it helpedaccuracy, but I get consistent sub moa groups with all of my rifles I use molycoated bullets in...hehehe... I use moly in all my jacketed reloadingscurrently, so every rifle is using moly, some rifles were already producing submoa groups before using moly and they only improved in ease of cleaning...untilI run out of moly coated bullets, perhaps 5 years, I'll be shooting exclusivelymoly coated jacketed bullets...BTW, I have not been really completely sucessfulcoating lead bullets, but I will keep trying...I found that a pre-shoot barrelcoating of liquid moly makes even the soft lead loads clean up easier... jmtcw

I found that a roundplastic bottle (the kind that my hunter's concentrated laundry detergentcomes in) fits in my tumbler nicely, and holds 100 or more bullets andthe 1/8 teaspoon of Moly needed to do the job.I've done smaller batches in smaller bottles, so even owners of smalltumblers can do this (my tumbler was bought for 12 ga trap shellcleaning, so it is rather big!)Ken. :)-- ---------------------------------------- --------------------------------- Don't call your civil war | Mail: kmarsh at charm dot net our War on Terrorism. | WWW: ---------------------------------------- ---------------------------------
