It takes the _averge_ major league player 4 daysto make that amount. I can't see Eddie Murphy standing in front a movie theatre handing outtickets to the little people in show business, nor a Congressmansubmitting a bill that allows the people whom the givernment has hurtto not pay taxes for a year or two, so the fact that ball players aresimilarly shortsighted doesn't surprise me.Some years ago I helped a person writing an article about statistics.I'm not sure if it is still true, but for several decades you couldchart teacher's salaries against ACT scores state-by-state and plainlysee that the more teachers are paid, the less well-educated thestudents are. One legislator in Nebraska some years ago suggested that stateemployees be paid with checks that are the size of monopoly money, toillustrate how much less they're making than what people in the realworld can earn.
FLARE JEANS : I know there is a problem, but I also know that working for thegivernment, in any capacity, is too often the refuge of theincompetent. There are school teachers out there who are soill-informed that they think that slavery was the major issue in theAmerican Civil War, and even the NEA is advising teachers now to telltheir students that 9/11 was America's fault. A good teacher is priceless, but the average teacher is worthless.Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy. Posting to misc.writing makes (Wildepad) happy ...Where I work, employees are paid roughly according to their experience and skills, as well as their perceived value to the company.A "fresh-out", with little to no experience, gets paid just barely enough to make working for this company more enticing than working for that company. She is given small increases a little more often than are more seasoned employees, just to keep her ahead of the increases later "fresh-outs" may be making but after a couple of years, she gets her once-a-year-if-that increases based mainly on merit.
FLARE JEANS : Promos and merit increases are figured based on the results of intensive yearly performance reviews.If you're a very high performer, you'll move rapidly up the food chain and get chunky increases AND you'll get stock options that you can exercise in small quantities after a few years -- presumably you'll be even more incentivized to out-perform yourself to help make the stock options worth something.Patent winners, paper writers, innovative developers -- all get rewarded. Even the secretarial, financial, program management and managerial types get rewarded -- or not -- based on performance.I've given goose-eggs to my employees who were not performing. I have walked people who were not performing out the door. I have had little "talks" with people who needed a little talk to hopefully wake them up, and I have given them ideas on ways they could improve themselves. I have put people on "performance improvement plans".
FLARE JEANS : I am unaware of such things for teachers in our district. I know they are paid abysmally, when compared with ball players or even engineers. I know they have unions, and it is the union that protects them sufficiently that they don't readily get walked out the door when they fail to perform well so this is why I am surprised that union that is keeping them in that job can't manage to at least make them multi-millionaires.Personally, I'd rather see that union get shitcanned -- it is what is keeping them down, and it is what is permitting the stupid teachers to remain employed and the good teachers from getting adequate reward. ...by local governments, and people who are continuously carping aboutschool taxes. On the other hand...Our school district got behind a big referendum for a bond issue toimprove our schools. It passed, and they charged every household about$500 in increased taxes. Then they blew the money on administrators,celebrity CEO perks, and consultants.

"School district" is synonymous with *school board* because the board is thetrustee owner of the district, and nothing happens until the board does it.School board is synonymous with governance, my specialty.
