DENIM JEANS : Donna G.5 -feet-2-inches and been hemming my jeans since I was a teen!Guttermann's Top Stitching thread comes to mind here: comes in about 20colours! I can get it all over the place. Shout if you need helpfinding it.If you want to look really "hip," you could apply a trim over the seaminstead of worring about the lack of thread.I've hemmed denim jeans in a lot of different ways and cursed violentlyat the Levi corporation for most of them.First, use a good heavy duty (90/4 or 100/6 Schmetz) denim or leatherneedle. This is essential! Leather needles work really well for extraheavy denim and canvas, like you find in Carharts and Dickies.I avoid multiple thicknesses in the hem by finishing the raw edge of thehem with a close, wide zig-zag (serging would work as well or better). Ithen trim the thickness in the seams in the hem to just past the fold, turn up a roughly 5/8" hem, and topstitch the hem twice--1/8" away fromthe bottom of the hem and roughly 3/8" away from the first topstitch. Ihaven't had a problem with fraying and the hems aren't lumpy.

DENIM JEANS : By all means, machine hem the jeans. Use a standard point needle,(not aball-point)-- size 18, good sturdy thread (the gold is difficult tofind) I use Coat's and Clark thread, it works fine. Match the thread tothe jean color, as much as possible. Cut enough hem allowance so that you can sew a double-roll hem tomimic the original hem (Usually 1 1/2 inches, then double-roll this fora finished 3/4 inch hem.)You can soften the thick seam areas by layingthe jeans on a scrap of wood, and tapping the trimmed andfolded-for-hemming seams with a hammer. Use a long stitch, and a hump-jumper behind the needle when you aresewing over the thick seam--and, if your machine doesn't want to sewover the seam, 'walk' the needle over, lifting the foot, moving the jeanhem back, putting foot down, turning the wheel so that a stitch forms, repeating the maneuver until you are about 1/2 inch past the seam. Don'tpull on the jean hem as you are doing this, or you will break yourneedle. Tedious but effective. You may have to crank the machine tension up a bit to keep threadsblanced on such heavy fabric, since you have an old machine. (The bestkind.) At no time do you backstitch. To finish the hem, simply stitch pastthe starting stitches about a 1/2 inch or so, stitching over thebeginning stitches. Because of this double stitching, I _always_ beginthe hemming on the inside of the jean legs, where it will be lessobvious. I always pre-shrink new jeans before hemming. This removes anyfinishes or sizing which may be in the fabric. Cea---Hemming a pair of denim jeans wrote in message...

DENIM JEANS : WOW! You all are so creative and clever! I love the idea about using atrim at the bottom! I'll have to give it a try. . .I found the sandpaper idea and hammering on the wood to be soincredibly imaginative. I tried the sandpaper one this morning and itnot only changes the color at the bottom, but also softens the pantsup a bit!I do not know what a hump jumper is, but I am going fabric shoppingtomorrow, so I'll look around the store. I will also look for thethread and stuff you all recommended.I haven't sewn in years; I mainly cross stitch and raise a family. Iam VERY excited about all the possibilities! Thanks to all of you! Maybe I won't look like such a goober after all!DD won't let me hem any of her jeans. She say's (and she's right, ofcourse) that they never look the same, even if you find matching thread. Itis too perfect looking. One thing you can do that helps a little is thatafter you finish hemming them, take a piece of sandpaper and rub it over thecreases in the hem. Makes it look a little more natural.

DENIM JEANS : I recently got some J. Crew jeans in "lightweight denim." I reallylike them, but I hate the color. I didn't know what the color would belike since I ordered them online. They are that dirty-looking rinsedlook, which I know some people like, but I don't. They only havethese jeans in 2 colors, and both are really streaky or dirty looking.I don't mind a somewhat streaky look, or stonewashed, or whatever, butnot to the extent that it looks dirty and old or bleached out.So my question is, who else sells jeans in this lightweight denim? Ireally prefer that over regular denim. I find regular denim jeans tobe very uncomfortable. I would like to get some lightweight jeanssimilar to the J. Crew ones, at a similar price, preferably from astore that sells online. Any ideas? Oh, and a skirt in lightweightdenim would be great too.I found a Faded Glory long skirt at Walmart in light colored lightweight denim. It has slits on both sides and four pockets.Mary

DENIM JEANS : "In preparing for battle I have always found that plans are useless, butplanning is indispensable." Dwight D. EisenhowerI feel the same about regular denim. I really like Mavi jeans. Theycome in a wide assortment of styles and rinses, and most of theirstyles are made in a nice, soft lightweight denim. I find them to bethe most comfortable jeans I've worn. I'm not sure who sells themonline, but I see them on eBay.I heartily second this recommendation! My Mavi jeans (yes, all 4 pairs ofthem!) are definitely my most comfortable and flattering. The denim trulyis lightweight and very soft to the touch! I know they come in differentstyles and washes, but the Molly style is my favorite. You can find Mavi jeans online at shopbop.com and nordstrom.com.Jill Stuart Jeans also come in a lightweight denim.AprilREMOVE "NOSPAM" to reply"The trouble with resisting temptation is it may never come again." --FortuneCookieI find that Levi's ...I am sorry, I forget the number! Is it 515? Anywayit's the lower-rise, stretch, bootcut style....these are pretty lightweightand very comfy and flattering and most importantly, come in short! (andregular and tall)....I also like the Levi's that are in the junior'ssection, the superlow stretch bootcut.
