BLUE JEANS : I am tying the quilts, and am putting ties randomly on each square in the middleof a patch. About 4-5 ties per square, sometimes less. I'm using cotton thread,It's 8/2 from a weaving store (leftovers from weaving kitchen towels) and is asoft pink so goes really well. The hardest part about this is making sure I usesquare knots rather than granny knots.I also used a bunch of the fancy embroidery stitches on some of the seams (needa nice sharp needle for that!) using cotton machine quilting thread in deep blueand dark green. It added a lot of interest to the quilt. I didn't do it onevery seam, but most of the non-pocket blocks have at least one seam fancystitched like that. they are pretty heavy, and only lap sized (my lap, not thekids') at 20 blocks each. But they were a lot of fun to put together and I hopemy nieces come to love them and use them well.

BLUE JEANS : PS. If you have any other specific questions about jeans quilts - feel free tomail me with them!Jane, there is a charming lady about 75 in our town who has made over 200blue jean quilts for the local teenagers. She makes them lap quilt size, so thekids can take them to the park or beach. She cuts the fabric in rectangles, using a copy of Reader's Digest as a pattern.(She explained that she uses the RD because no matter where she goes there'salways one lying around somewhere!) She sews the rectangles together with a1/4" seam, uses polyester batting and flannel backing, and puts yarn ties ateach patch corner. She generally cuts one rectangle with a pocket for each quilt. The different colors of blue denim look very attractive, and the little quilts wear like iron!I used her scheme to make a beach blanket quilt out of a HUGE black polyesterski suit. It worked out very well, went really fast, and produced a wonderfullypractical throw for sand or grass.

BLUE JEANS : Hi! I think a blue jeans quilt is a great idea, and I think it isespecially great what this woman in your town is doing for the teenagers.I have seen many neat ways to recycle blue jeans & their various partsrecently. When you are done making your quilt, you can use the pockets tomake little purses or to hang dried flowers in. If you cut up close to theseams, you can use the seams to make braided baskets, placemats, or rugs. The kind you would normally make using folded strips of fabric. I havealso seen where the blue jeans are cut to shorts length, one of the sideseams is opened up, and they are used as cafe curtains with the rod goingthru the belt loops. Who would have thought you could have so much funwith a pair of blue jeans?!I know this is the quilting newsgroup, but I'd like to toss this idea intothe pot:

BLUE JEANS : I've made lots of stuffed animals for babies out of old blue jeans, withthe belief that they'll be washable, almost indestructable, and there'snothing a baby can do to blue jeans that hasn't already happened!Since most of my friends kid's are outgrowing the denim teddy stage, mynext project is to make quilts out of the leftover denim - many thanks tothe people who've posted on this thread, who are giving me lots of ideasof what to do!Nea"Five days a week, my body is a temple. The other two, it's an amusement park." -- Jerry DoyleThank to everyone that posted on this thread! I never thought I would evenwant to make a quilt out of blue jeans but now since I have read all thewonderful things you are doing with the blue jeans, I have to try one! Ithink my 10 year old grandson would love one! Now to get some old bluejeans....garage sales?? What a wonderful excuse to go!! Maybe I'll starttomorrow afternoon after work. Oh no!!! ANOTHER PROJECT!!! :--)Phyllis

BLUE JEANS : I hear that blue jeans are all the rage in Tokyo. Can't you just seeMinako in hers? I can. This song is from the POV of a boy in herschool, who has developed a crush her. Not hard to imagine. The tuneis "Venus in Blue Jeans", by Frankie Avalon I think. If you don'tknow the original, just call up your local oldies radio station andrequest it.
